Developing and facilitating leadership

As I completed my BEd and MEd at the University of Lethbridge, I have a strong connection with the faculty and staff. I was given the opportunity to teach in the Master's of Education program during my leave from Rockyview Schools. I taught classes for administrators and teachers for both the Calgary and Peace River cohorts. I am currently waiting to teach their EDUC 5300 class, History and Philosophy in Education, when a cohort is scheduled for Calgary or the surrounding area.
Developing and facilitating leadership skills is important not only in a formal setting but also within a school itself. Developing leadership in others provides a democratic atmosphere in a school. Potential school leaders can be found in many places including the student body and the staff. Providing opportunities for others to develop their leadership skills is an important facet to developing a 21st century model. There must be support for, and help with, developing the changes necessary. Besides, its a good thing when more people can provide input and become involved. In Jim Collins, Good to Great for the Social Sectors, he recognizes the need to get the right people on the bus and putting those people in the right seats. Sometimes, as long as we get the right people on the bus, developing their skills so they can sit in the right seats, can and should happen. As well, Daniel Pink's Drive, offers another way to look at motivation. Also, one of the most influential thinkers and advocates for 21st century learning and teaching is Sir Ken Robinson.
