Managing school operations and resources

Picture
Managing a school is a complex task. Managing a school through significant philosophical and organizational change is monumental. It requires strong communication and relational skills. It requires fundamental organizational skills. It requires sound judgment and decision-making skills. Balancing the needs of the school with limited resources can be difficult. As a school leader, it is imperative then to have a clear vision of what you want your school to be and define the priorities in allocating resources and time to move the organization forward.
I have had a couple of opportunities to deal with the complex task of managing school operations and resources. Through my work as a Curriculum Leader at Bert Church High School as well as AISI lead at Springbank High School, I was in charge of budgeting and allocating funds. I am coordinating part of the professional learning of the beginning teachers this year, setting meeting dates, finding time to be available as a mentor to other teachers in the school, and teaching my regular courses.
As well, in my former position with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary, I was in charge of the Pineridge Club in Calgary. There, I managed the club operations from budgeting financial resources, hiring staff and volunteers and planning programs for children from 6 to 18 years. It was a complex task and through good organization and management skills, I was able to make the club a successful and fun one.
