Alberta Education: Principal Quality Standards

"In ensuring that all students have the best possible opportunities to learn, the responsibilities and competencies of administrators as instructional leaders have significantly increased...It is imperative for school administrators to focus more than ever on the core purpose of school, ie. providing all students with the best possible opportunities to learn. Consequently, school administrators must have a thorough knowledge of teaching and learning so they are able to serve as instructional, educational, and organizational leaders focused on the school's core purpose." (Rocky View Schools - Administrator Quality Practice Standard)

My core purpose is "learning for all".

Each of the duties I have undertaken this year, whether that is discipline, university liaison, or convocation and special events, have all centred around the idea of "learning for all". As much as our core purpose in the schools is about students' learning, I find that what has driven me for most of this year is making sure that I can help to create the most optimal conditions for learning to occur. Whether I am talking to staff, parents, and/or students, I believe our core function is to learn. This is not only an individual endeavour but also a collaborative one as well.
As I have gone through this year, there are a number of duties I have accomplished, some by design and some by happenstance, that provide evidence in my growth as an administrator for Rocky View Schools and Springbank High School. Although I have used the Principal Quality Standards as entities unto themselves for ease of organization, I understand that most of what I have accomplished this year blends the categories of the PQS.
